Bio: Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra (MIT Ph.D.) is a Professor of International Business and Strategy and the Lloyd Mullin Research Fellow at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business, Northeastern University. He is an expert on global strategy, studying three topics in his research: the internationalization of firms, with a special interest in emerging market multinationals; capability upgrading, particularly technological capabilities; and governance challenges, focusing on state ownership and corruption.
In 2016, he was elected Fellow of the Academy of International Business, and in 2019 he received an Honorary Doctorate from Copenhagen Business School and a JIBS Silver Medal for intellectual contributions to Journal of International Business Studies. Alvaro is co-editor of Global Strategy Journal, consulting editor of Journal of International Business Studies, in which he previously acted as reviewing editor, and a member of the editorial board of Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, and Strategic Management Journal.
He served in the Executive Committee of the International Management division of the Academy of Management, as representative-at-large in the Global Strategy Interest Group of the Strategic Management Society, and trice as Program Track Chair at the Academy of International Business. His service has been acknowledged with twelve best reviewer awards. Alvaro has provided consulting and training on global strategy for owners and top managers of firms in Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Poland, and the USA; on how to facilitate internationalization for government agencies in Brazil and Thailand; and on how to build research capabilities for universities in Brazil, Kuwait, Mexico, Spain, and Thailand.
