Bio: Helena Barnard (Ph.D. from Rutgers University) is full professor at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria. She is interested in how knowledge (and with it, technology, organisational practices and innovation) moves between more and less developed countries, particularly in Africa.

Themes she covers in her work include how turbulence and instability affect international business, science and knowledge behind the technology frontier, and migration. A cross-cutting theme is guidance on how to do research in an underdeveloped context, for example in her edited Edgar Elgar book Handbook for Qualitative Research in Emerging Markets.

Her research is published in the Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Research Policy, Journal of World Business, Journal of International Business Policy and others. She was AIB Vice-President for Administration (2017-2020), the 2018-2019 Dunning Fellow at the University of Reading, the founding chair of the Emerging Markets Shared Interest Group of AIB, and is currently an area editor at the Academy of Management Perspectives and Journal of International Business Policy.
