Alan M. Rugman Young Scholar Award
Overview
The Alan M. Rugman Young Scholar Award (formerly known as the Haynes Prize) is awarded to a paper that must have been accepted for presentation at the AIB conference through a double-blind-review process, and have been written by an author or authors under 40 years of age.
Originally called the Eldridge Haynes Prize, the award was given to the best original essay on some aspect of international business, preferably with an interdisciplinary perspective. The competition was open to authors under 40 years of age and awarded every other year from 1992-1998. In 1999, the AIB Executive Board changed the award to the Haynes Prize for Best Paper at the AIB annual meeting to coincide with current trends in academic research.
In 2015, the award was renamed after former AIB President and Dean of AIB Fellows Alan M. Rugman to honor his legacy and lasting contributions to AIB, in particular his commitment to the engagement and development of junior scholars in the field of international business.
Selection Process
The winner is chosen by an official Selection Committee from a slate of nominees, as identified by our Annual Conference track chairs. The author(s) receive a plaque and a scholarship award, provided by AIB. The winner is announced at the Awards Ceremony of the AIB Annual Conference. For more detailed information, consult the Rugman Award Bylaws.

Peter J. Buckley and Mark Casson AIB Dissertation Award
Overview
AIB’s premier award for superior doctoral dissertations was originally named for Richard Farmer, a globally recognized scholar and prolific author who was considered to be among the founding fathers of international business in the United States. He served as the President of AIB from 1977-78. AIB continued to fund the award until 2012 in his name with financial support from the Indiana University Center for International Business Education and Research and the Michigan State University Center for International Business Education and Research.
With new sponsorship starting in 2013, the AIB Dissertation Award now also recognizes the seminal contributions of Mark Casson and Peter J. Buckley for their 1976 pioneering development of internalization theory as an explanation of the Multinational Enterprise (MNE). In subsequent work, Buckley and Casson have applied internalization theory to explain other modes of international business such as international joint ventures, licensing, offshore assembly and the global factory. Thus the AIB Dissertation Award now pays special tribute to the importance of both the environment of international business practice and the nature of the MNE.
Selection Process
The winner is chosen by an official Selection Committee, four AIB members with different academic specialities who are appointed annually by the AIB President. This committee identifies a slate of four finalists, all of whom are invited to the AIB Annual Conference to present their research findings. The winner is announced at the Awards Ceremony of the AIB Annual Conference. Winning authors are given an award plaque and a check for US $1,000. For more detailed information, consult the Buckley and Casson Dissertation Award Bylaws.
