Bio: Matt obtained his PhD from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia and is now an associate professor of international business & strategy at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. He is also a guest professor at Zhejiang University in China (PIEGL Master’s program) and holds a title of visiting professor at the School of Economics and Business, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Prior to moving to New Zealand in 2018, Matt was a Fulbright Fellow at Harvard University, FAS Sociology (2017), a visiting professor at Kyungpook National University in South Korea (2014) and a visiting professor at the Shanghai University of Economics and International Business in China (2012-2013).
Matt’s research interests are at the intersection of economic sociology and international business, where he works with social identity theory, social cognitive theory and institutional theory. One strand of his research focuses on social identity underpinnings of consumer culture and social identity issues within or connected to multinational enterprises. Adjacent to this is also his research on diversity, equity and inclusion at the supranational and national levels within an international business context. The second stream of his research focuses on the social psychology of various macro-level phenomena, which constitute political risks for multinational enterprises, like corruption, populism and social movements.
Matt started as an Executive Board member of the AIB-CEE chapter and was Co-Chair of the 2017 AIB-CEE chapter conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was Vice-President Marketing at the Australia and New Zealand International Business Academy (2020-2023) and currently serves as one of the Vice-Presidents of Digital Communications within the AIB Teaching & Education SIG. He is also an active member of the AIB Oceania chapter and guest co-edited two special issues of AIB Insights on “Engaging with Oceania” and “diversity, equity and inclusion”. He is also a founding member of the AIB Diversity & Inclusion taskforce.
Matt currently serves as Senior Editor at the European Journal of International Management and sits on editorial review boards of Business Horizons, Multinational Business Review, International Journal of Emerging Markets, AIB Insights and Journal of East European Management Studies. He has published in the Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of International Business Policy, Journal of Business Research, Multinational Business Review, AIB Insights, European Journal of International Management Studies and Cross-Cultural & Strategic Management. He has also co-authored a 2017 book “Understanding a Changing China: Key Issues for Business” with Routledge.
