A Half-Century of Global Scholarship:
The History of AIB Chapters & Shared Interest Groups

From a single chapter in Canada in 1971, the AIB community has grown into a worldwide network spanning every major world region. This page documents the full history of that growth — every chapter and Shared Interest Group (SIG) ever established, and every individual who served in a leadership role.

Key Milestones

A selection of landmark moments in the evolution of the AIB component network — from the first chapter to the establishment of a fully global presence and the creation of the SIG structure.

1971
First Chapter
Canada: AIB's inaugural chapter

The AIB chapter network was born with the founding of the Canada chapter in 1971 — the first regional community within the Academy. The chapter has operated continuously for over 55 years — longer than any other.

1972
Founding Surge
Rapid International Expansion — Europe and Asia presence established

1972 saw an extraordinary expansion: Western Europe (AIB's first European chapter), Japan (first Asian chapter), and four U.S. regional chapters — Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, and West — all established in the same year, creating the foundation of the global network.

1973
Chapter Founded
United Kingdom & Ireland chapter established

A distinct chapter for the UK and Ireland was created, reflecting the strength and depth of AIB's academic community in the British Isles. It is one of AIB's longest-continuously active chapters.

1978
First MENA Chapter
Egypt: first foothold in Africa and the Middle East

The Egypt chapter, established in 1978, marked AIB's first organizational presence in the Middle East and North Africa region — an early signal of the Academy's ambition to be truly global.

1985
Chapter Founded
Southeast Asia chapter established

The Southeast Asia chapter formalized AIB's presence in one of the world's most dynamic economic regions. It would later be restructured in 2020 — absorbing the China, Japan, and Korea chapters — to become today's Asia Pacific chapter.

1994
First Latin American Chapter
Chile: AIB's first presence in Latin America

The Chile chapter became AIB's inaugural Latin American chapter in 1994. Though it later became inactive, it opened the door to a region that is now represented by the active Latin America & the Caribbean chapter.

1996
Expanding in Africa
Africa chapter: dedicated Sub-Saharan representation

The Africa chapter (initially the South Africa chapter) established AIB's first dedicated organizational presence on the African continent, a distinct presence from the earlier Egypt chapter in the MENA region.

2001
Precursor to SIGs
Women in AIB (WAIB) founded as an independent organization

WAIB was established in 2001 as an independent association within AIB — years before the SIG system existed. Its mission to advance the careers and scholarship of women in international business set a precedent for thematic communities. In 2017, when AIB formally introduced Shared Interest Groups, WAIB was grandfathered in as a founding SIG.

2003
First South Asian Chapter
India chapter: South Asia joins the network

The India chapter, established in 2003, brought South Asia into the AIB chapter family. It was later restructured in 2021 into the broader South Asia regional chapter, reflecting the growth of the AIB community across the subcontinent.

2008
First Oceania Chapter
Australia–New Zealand: AIB reaches Oceania

The Australia–New Zealand chapter (later renamed Oceania) gave the region its first dedicated AIB home.

2009
Global Milestone
Latin America and MENA chapters complete the map

With the addition of the Latin America chapter and the Middle East & North Africa chapter in 2009, every major world region was now home to at least one AIB chapter — a milestone representing the Academy's transformation into a genuinely global organization.

2016
First Formal SIG
Research Methods: the SIG era begins

The Research Methods SIG was formally the first Shared Interest Group designated under the AIB's new SIG structure — providing a dedicated home for scholars focused on advancing methodological rigor in international business research. WAIB, which predated this structure, was subsequently grandfathered in as a SIG in 2017.

2019
Peak Network Size
21 simultaneous components — the largest in AIB history

By 2019, the combined total of chapters and SIGs reached its highest point in AIB history — 18 chapters and 3 SIGs — before consolidations and restructurings in the following years reduced the chapter count while broadening the scope of individual components.

2020
Restructuring
Asia Pacific consolidation: China, Japan, and Korea merge

The China, Japan, and Korea chapters merged with the Southeast Asia chapter to form the broader Asia Pacific chapter — a strategic consolidation reflecting shared regional identity and the desire to strengthen collective impact across the region.

2024
Newest SIG
Digitalization SIG: responding to a transformed world

The Digitalization SIG, established in 2024, is the most recent addition to the AIB component network — reflecting the field's growing engagement with digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and technology-driven changes in international business.
