What is the Purpose of This Workshop?

Every year, the AIB main conference attracts a large number of submissions on the theme of emerging markets. The number of submissions on this theme surpasses those on other themes. However, many of these authors face various challenges, from getting their papers accepted to obtaining funding for attending the AIB conference. On a broader level, numerous researchers focusing on emerging markets have expressed frustration with challenges ranging from collecting data to accessing funding to developing theories on emerging markets. This workshop aims to support AIB members working on emerging markets-related topics by discussing and finding solutions to the challenges mentioned earlier. Additionally, it aims to provide feedback on participants’ work related to emerging markets.

Who is This Event For?

This PDW aims to benefit AIB members interested in research on emerging markets, especially those who wish to discuss, exchange ideas, and find potential solutions to the challenges they encounter when researching emerging markets. The PDW also aims to assist those with a draft paper who would like to receive constructive feedback from other researchers to improve their work.

Please note that although this PDW is open to all scholars interested in emerging markets, space is limited. Priority will be given to scholars residing in emerging markets.

How Can I Participate in This Workshop?

To be considered for this PDW, we invite authors to submit an extended abstract (maximum of five pages; 12-point font, 1.5 spacing) using our Online Submission Form.

The extended abstract submission deadline is 15 April 2025 in the author’s time zone (or until places are filled). Due to space constraints, we can only invite one participant per paper to the workshop.

What Should I do if my Extended Abstract is Accepted?

Submitting authors will be notified of the outcomes of the review process by 5 May 2025. We request that the author confirm their attendance by 15 May 2025.  If the author fails to confirm their participation, the opportunity to attend the PDW will be offered to someone else.

Please note that the PDW participating author must register for the AIB Louisville Conference by 15 May 2025 to participate in this in-person Pre-Conference PDW.

How is This Event Structured?

The PDW spans half a day and is divided into two parts: The first half features a structured session focused on “The Opportunities and Challenges of Researching Emerging Markets.” Led by senior scholars, this session provides participants with the opportunity to discuss and gain valuable insights. The second half is a breakout session allowing authors to engage in roundtable conversations with the mentors, discussing their research papers in smaller, more focused group.

A social event organized by EM-SIG will follow this PDW.

Who are the Participating Mentors in this PDW?

We are privileged to offer mentoring by senior scholars researching emerging markets. Various board members of the EM-SIG will also be involved. Senior scholars who have already agreed to join us include professors (listed alphabetically): Snehal Awate (Indian Institute of Technology, India), Helena Barnard (GIBS-University of Pretoria, South Africa), Kristin Brandl (University of Victoria, Canada), Jorge Carneiro (FGV, Brazil), Ziad Elsahn (Lancaster University, UK), Maria Alejndra Gonzalez-Perez (Universidad EAFIT, Colombia), Jane Lu (City University of Hong Kong, China),  Ravi Ramamurti (Northeastern University, USA), Matt Raskovic (Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand), and Gracy Yang (The University of Sydney, Australia). These scholars serve as editors on many IB journals such as the Journal of International Business Policy, International Business Review, International Journal of Emerging Markets, Management and Organization Review, and Critical Perspective on International Business.

Who are the PDW Organizers?

This PDW is designed and organized by the AIB Emerging Markets Shared Interest Group (EM-SIG). The EM-SIG seeks to make a targeted impact on IB research and practice within emerging market regions—areas that represent a majority of the world’s population and play an essential role in global economic growth.  The co-chairs for this PDW are Yingying Zhang-Zhang and Pooja Thakur-Wernz.
